To optimise efficiency of the dredging process the pump speed ideally has to be adjusted constantly to dredging parameters such as vacuum, discharge pressure, and dredge mixture velocity and density. The Variblock is a continuously variable speed transmission gearbox that offers outgoing speed variation with minimal loss of efficiency at constant input power and speed. Various output speed options are possible, for instance, an increase or decrease in output speed of 15% with an overall gearbox efficiency of 94%.

Principle of operation
The heart of the Variblock is a special planetary gear wheel system that allows incorporation of two coupled input shafts. Varying one of the shafts hydraulically controls the outgoing speed without the requirement for extra external power. The control is achieved by a hydraulic pump and motor as a part of the Variblock unit. Because the output speed of the Variblock is regulated by only a small part of the shaft power, total gearbox efficiency is very high.
• dynamic control ensures an optimal dredge process
• no necessity to adjust impeller diameter for different pipeline lengths
• optimal performance also from the simplest stationary diesel motor
• the constant power controller means fast response to a threatening blockage
• lower investment than an electric drive
• all hydraulic components stocked across the world and easily deliverable
